Position Summary NYU IT Technologies for Research, AI, and Learning, AI Center for Excellence AI/GenAI Development team is seeking a contract Full-Stack AI Engineer to support the design and development of scalable applications for researchers, instructors, and administrators. The role will work across frontend, backend, APIs, data, and AI-enabled workflows. As several projects are in early stages of design and development, we are looking for strong engineering fundamentals, adaptability, and problem-solving ability rather than experience with one specific technology stack.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable full-stack web applications. Build responsive and accessible user interfaces and backend services. Develop and integrate APIs, databases, and external services. Prototype and implement AI-enabled workflows, including Generative AI and retrieval-based applications. Test, troubleshoot, and improve applications across the technology stack. Collaborate with researchers, faculty, designers, and developers to translate requirements into working solutions. Support deployment, version control, testing, and development workflows. Create clear technical documentation for applications and technical solutions.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated experience developing full-stack applications. Strong frontend development fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript. Experience with a modern frontend framework such as React, Next.js, Vue, Angular, or similar. Experience developing backend services and APIs. Experience working with relational databases and integrating frontend and backend systems. Hands-on experience integrating Generative AI or LLM capabilities into an application, prototype, or technical solution. Experience with Git/GitHub or similar collaborative development workflows. Strong debugging, technical problem-solving, and software development fundamentals. Ability to learn new technologies and work effectively with evolving or partially defined requirements. Ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Preferred Experience Experience in one or more of the following is a plus: RAG, embeddings, vector search, tool/function calling, agentic workflows, or other advanced AI application patterns. Cloud application development and deployment using AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar platforms. CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or comparable technologies. Data visualization and dashboard development. WCAG accessibility and accessible frontend development. Experience taking applications from prototype through production. Common Technologies Our projects commonly use React, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python/Node.js, REST APIs, PostgreSQL/SQL, Git/GitHub, and Generative AI technologies, along with tools such as Next.js, FastAPI, MongoDB, AWS/GCP/Azure, Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift, and GitHub Actions. Candidates are not expected to have experience with every technology listed. Experience with comparable technologies and frameworks is welcome.
