Its brands include CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, Golf Channel, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and USA Sports, along with digital businesses such as Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, and GolfPass.
About the Role
VERSANT is seeking a Data Engineer II to join its Data Services team and build the data pipelines and products that support GolfNow and the company's sports technology organization. This hands-on engineering role focuses on developing and operating production data systems within an AWS-based lakehouse, delivering reliable data for reporting, analytics, product development, and emerging AI applications. You will help modernize workloads that currently depend on legacy on-premises SQL Server infrastructure, moving data pipelines and reporting processes to AWS. The role offers ownership of production systems, opportunities to contribute to technical decisions, and collaboration with engineering, product, analytics, and data science teams. You will also help improve platform reliability, guide technical discussions, and support junior engineers through code reviews and knowledge sharing.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data models within an AWS-based medallion lakehouse using technologies such as Amazon S3, Apache Iceberg, dbt, Amazon Redshift, and Airflow or Amazon MWAA. Own production data services and improve reliability through monitoring, automated testing, observability, resilient architecture, deployment practices, and disaster recovery. Build reusable components and automation to simplify dataset onboarding and support consistent data engineering practices. Apply data governance, lineage, schema evolution, security, and least-privilege access practices across data pipelines and products. Develop trusted data products for reporting, analytics, APIs, and AI-powered applications, including data structures suitable for text-to-SQL and large language model use cases. Support the migration of pipelines and reporting workloads from legacy SQL Server, SSIS, and SSRS environments to AWS. Validate migrated data outputs and downstream dependencies before transitioning workloads to new systems. Troubleshoot production issues, investigate root causes, and improve system performance, reliability, and resource utilization. Work with engineering, product, analytics, and data science teams to address business and technical requirements. Lead technical discussions and medium-sized cross-functional initiatives within your area of responsibility. Participate in code reviews, provide technical guidance, and support the development of junior engineers. Communicate technical decisions, risks, progress, and trade-offs clearly while adapting to changing requirements and incorporating feedback.
Required Qualifications
Hands-on experience building, deploying, and supporting cloud-based data pipelines, preferably using AWS services such as Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, and Redshift or comparable technologies. Strong SQL and Python programming skills. Experience developing ETL and ELT workflows using structured and semi-structured data. Working knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, orchestration, and modern data engineering practices. Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools such as Airflow and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform. Experience improving the performance, reliability, and resource utilization of production data systems. Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills, including the ability to understand upstream and downstream dependencies. Ability to work independently on ambiguous technical problems and recognize when collaboration or escalation is needed. Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, analytics, product, data science, and business teams. Preferred Qualifications / Requirements Experience with dbt, Apache Iceberg, change data capture, or data products supporting large language models and AI agents. Exposure to SSIS, SSRS, PowerShell, or migrations from legacy SQL Server environments. Familiarity with Tableau, Power BI, or Amazon QuickSight. Experience working in an Agile engineering environment using tools such as Jira and Confluence. Location and Work Arrangement Location: United States. Work arrangement: Fully remote, with opportunities for in-person collaboration approximately 10% of the time. Employment type: Full-time.
