Data Engineer II - Remote Opportunity
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Data Engineer with deep expertise in enterprise data modeling to help modernize and expand an organization's enterprise data platform. In this role, you will lead data modeling across shared enterprise business domains while remaining actively involved in engineering and implementation. You will work from business requirements and source-system analysis through conceptual, logical, and physical modeling, helping build canonical enterprise models that support multiple applications, analytics requirements, and business use cases. You will also help establish modeling standards, influence architecture, improve existing models, and coach other Data Engineers as the enterprise modeling practice develops.
About the Company
The organization is making a significant investment in modernizing its enterprise data platform and building a standardized, scalable foundation for business analytics. Its transformation includes developing a modern layered data architecture, expanding the curated core of the platform, and establishing enterprise data modeling as a formal engineering discipline.
Key Responsibilities
Lead conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling across shared enterprise business domains. Design canonical enterprise models that support multiple applications, analytics requirements, and business use cases. Partner with business stakeholders to understand requirements, processes, terminology, and relationships between core business entities. Translate complex business requirements into scalable enterprise data models. Perform hands-on data analysis, profiling, and source-system assessments before designing models. Work with normalized, dimensional, and Data Vault modeling approaches. Build and implement dimensional models, including facts and dimensions, for analytics and reporting. Support downstream analytics environments, including Power BI. Contribute to existing enterprise models while designing and implementing new models. Establish modeling standards, naming conventions, documentation practices, and model-review processes. Use enterprise data modeling tools to develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical models. Collaborate with Data Engineers, Architects, BI Developers, Business Analysts, business stakeholders, and Governance teams. Support business definitions, data lineage, data quality, and cataloging initiatives. Guide and coach other Data Engineers on modeling approaches and standards. Help establish the curated enterprise layer within a modern data architecture.
Required Qualifications
Strong hands-on Data Engineering experience combined with deep data modeling expertise. Proven experience leading conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling. Experience designing models across shared enterprise business domains rather than exclusively for individual applications or reports. Strong experience with normalized, dimensional, and Data Vault modeling approaches. Experience translating business requirements into scalable enterprise data models. Hands-on experience with data profiling, data analysis, and source-system assessments. Strong dimensional modeling experience, including designing and implementing facts and dimensions. Experience supporting analytics and BI use cases, including Power BI environments. Experience with enterprise data modeling tools such as sqlDBM, Erwin, ER/Studio, or similar. Experience establishing or enforcing data modeling standards, naming conventions, and model-review practices. Ability to personally implement models as a hands-on Data Engineer rather than working exclusively at the architecture or design level. Experience collaborating with Data Engineers, Architects, BI Developers, Business Analysts, and business stakeholders. Experience working with data governance or catalog teams on business definitions, lineage, and data quality. Ability to coach other engineers and improve data modeling capabilities across a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with dbt. Experience working within a Medallion or similar layered architecture across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers. Experience building a curated or Silver enterprise data layer. Familiarity with Master Data Management concepts. Experience with Informatica IICS or PowerCenter. AWS experience. Experience migrating data environments from on-premises SQL Server to the cloud. Familiarity with Git-based development workflows. Experience with data governance or catalog platforms such as Data.world. Experience in logistics, field services, waste, transportation, or other asset-heavy operational environments. Salary & Employment Details Compensation: $110,000–$160,000. Employment Type: Full-time. Work Arrangement & Location Work Arrangement: Remote within the United States. Preferred Location: Phoenix, Arizona. What Makes Someone Successful in This Role The successful candidate will be comfortable working with business stakeholders, participating in modeling sessions, and contributing directly to engineering implementation. They should be able to understand relationships between business entities such as customers, facilities, products, operations, and financial entities, then translate those relationships into conceptual, logical, and physical models. A strong enterprise-level perspective is essential. The focus is on developing standardized entities and relationships that serve multiple teams and business use cases, rather than building models for individual dashboards or applications. Experience helping establish enterprise modeling standards, processes, and engineering practices in a developing environment is particularly valuable. Why Join? This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of an enterprise data platform while it is being built. You will help define the curated core of the platform, establish enterprise modeling standards, and develop reusable data models that become foundational assets across the organization. You will remain hands-on while influencing architecture, setting standards, and supporting the professional development of other Data Engineers.
