Data Engineer II (WFH)

Remote · Switzerland Full-time

About the Company

A large, established organization is investing in the modernization of its enterprise data platform to create a more standardized and scalable foundation for business analytics. The organization is developing a modern layered data architecture and expanding its curated enterprise data layer. As part of this work, it is establishing enterprise data modeling as a formal engineering discipline, with a focus on building reusable models that support multiple business domains and use cases.

About the Role

The organization is seeking a hands-on Senior Data Engineer with strong data engineering capabilities and deep expertise in enterprise data modeling. This is not a standalone Data Modeler position. The successful candidate will continue working directly on engineering implementation while leading data modeling across shared enterprise business domains. Responsibilities will cover the full modeling process, from understanding business requirements and assessing source systems to developing conceptual, logical, and physical models and implementing them within the data platform. The role offers an opportunity to establish modeling standards, influence architecture, improve existing models, and guide other Data Engineers as the enterprise modeling practice develops. The focus is on creating canonical enterprise models that can serve multiple applications, analytics requirements, and business use cases.

Key Responsibilities

Lead conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling across shared enterprise business domains Design canonical enterprise models that support multiple applications, analytics requirements, and business use cases Work with business stakeholders to understand requirements, processes, terminology, and relationships between core business entities Translate complex business requirements into scalable enterprise data models Perform hands-on data analysis, profiling, and source-system assessments before designing models Apply normalized, dimensional, and Data Vault modeling approaches Design and implement dimensional models, including facts and dimensions, for analytics and reporting Support downstream analytics environments, including Power BI Improve existing enterprise models while designing and implementing new models Establish modeling standards, naming conventions, documentation practices, and model-review processes Use enterprise data modeling tools to develop and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical models Collaborate with Data Engineers, Architects, BI Developers, Business Analysts, and Governance teams Support business definitions, data lineage, data quality, and data cataloging initiatives Coach other Data Engineers on modeling approaches and best practices Help build the curated enterprise layer within the organization's modern data architecture

Required Qualifications

Strong hands-on Data Engineering experience combined with deep data modeling expertise Proven experience leading conceptual, logical, and physical data modeling Experience designing models across shared enterprise business domains, rather than exclusively for individual applications or reports Strong experience with normalized, dimensional, and Data Vault modeling approaches Ability to translate business requirements into scalable enterprise data models Hands-on experience with data profiling, data analysis, and source-system assessments Strong dimensional modeling experience, including the design and implementation of facts and dimensions Experience supporting analytics and business intelligence use cases, including environments using Power BI Experience with enterprise data modeling tools such as sqlDBM, Erwin, ER/Studio, or similar platforms Experience establishing or enforcing data modeling standards, naming conventions, and model-review practices Ability to personally implement models as a hands-on Data Engineer, rather than working exclusively at the architecture or design level Experience collaborating with Data Engineers, Architects, BI Developers, Business Analysts, and business stakeholders Experience working with data governance or catalog teams on business definitions, lineage, and data quality Ability to coach other engineers and strengthen data modeling capabilities across a team

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with dbt Experience working with Medallion or similar layered architectures, including Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers Experience building a curated or Silver enterprise data layer Familiarity with Master Data Management concepts Experience with Informatica IICS or PowerCenter AWS experience Experience migrating data environments from on-premises SQL Server to the cloud Familiarity with Git-based development workflows Experience with data governance or catalog platforms such as Data.world Experience in logistics, field services, waste management, transportation, or other asset-heavy operational industries What Makes Someone Successful in This Role The ideal candidate can work effectively with business stakeholders, participate in data modeling discussions, and contribute directly to engineering implementation. They should be able to understand how business entities such as customers, facilities, products, operations, and financial entities relate to one another, then translate those relationships into well-structured conceptual and logical models. The candidate should also be comfortable profiling source data, designing physical models, and helping implement them within a modern data platform. An enterprise-wide perspective is important, with an emphasis on creating standardized entities and relationships that serve multiple teams rather than individual dashboards or applications. Experience helping develop an enterprise modeling practice, including its standards, processes, and engineering discipline, would be particularly valuable. Why Join? This role offers the opportunity to take meaningful ownership of an enterprise data platform while it is still being developed. The Senior Data Engineer will help shape the curated core of the platform, establish enterprise modeling standards, and build reusable data models that support the wider organization. The position combines hands-on engineering with the opportunity to influence architecture, improve standards, and support the development of other Data Engineers. Location and Work Arrangement Remote position within the United States Candidates based in Phoenix, Arizona, are preferred. Employment Type Full-time Salary & Benefits Compensation range: $110,000–$160,000.
