About The Role We are seeking a Staff Data Engineer, Market Data, to join the Institutional Markets team at Coinbase. In this role, you will architect, develop, and maintain the critical systems responsible for generating, capturing, normalizing, and distributing real-time market data within Coinbase’s unified trading platform. This position offers a unique opportunity to design market data infrastructure from the ground up, combining the agility and ownership of a startup with the scale and impact of a global financial technology leader. You will lead a lean, high-impact team and collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver robust, low-latency market data solutions that power institutional trading.

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of backend engineering experience, specifically in building and maintaining production low-latency systems. Hands-on experience with market data systems, including feed handlers, normalization, or distribution. Proficiency in low-latency programming languages such as Java or C++. Experience with high-throughput messaging technologies like Aeron or Simple Binary Encoding (SBE). Familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols such as FIX, ITCH/OUCH, and multicast. Proven track record of delivering features end-to-end and operating the systems you build. Demonstrated responsible use of generative AI, ensuring human oversight to produce business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate core market data components including feed handlers, normalization layers, distribution systems, and venue connectivity. Develop low-latency, high-throughput systems to support real-time market data consumption by trading systems. Enhance system reliability and performance through observability improvements, on-call support, and incident response management. Write high-quality, well-tested code that elevates the technical standards of a lean engineering team. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering and product to deliver comprehensive market data capabilities aligned with business objectives.
