Database Administrator (Fully Remote)

Remote · France Full-time

About the position The Database Administrator is responsible for the health, performance, security, and architecture of the organization's relational and NoSQL/document database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. During a period of modernization, the role maintains stable on-premises SQL Server systems while leading the design and migration of transactional workloads to Azure and supporting the move to Microsoft Fabric. The position partners with Software Development, QA, Infrastructure, Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, Business Intelligence, and vendors, with a prevention-first approach to protecting PHI and organizational data. The Database Administrator is the primary technical owner and escalation point for production and non-production databases and data stores, and leads database architecture, design standards, and Azure migration strategy in alignment with enterprise architecture. The role proactively identifies performance, capacity, security, and stability risks; manages database operations and migrations; supports multiple cloud and NoSQL platforms; and establishes monitoring, security, continuity, documentation, and change-management practices. This is a remote work-from-home position requiring standard computer and telephone use. An on-call rotation and occasional after-hours or weekend work for maintenance, migrations, and incidents are required. Candidates must pass a background screen and drug screen, and employees must comply with HIPAA and company policies concerning sensitive health information.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, patch, secure, and support on-premises SQL Server, including SQL Agent, SSIS, and linked servers, while maintaining stability during the transition.
  • Inventory databases, dependencies, and data flows to sequence migrations, and decommission servers after workloads are moved.
  • Lead design of the Azure transactional environment, including Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance, and SQL on Azure VMs; determine tiers, sizing, high availability, networking, and security through the architecture review process.
  • Oversee on-premises-to-Azure database migrations from assessment through cutover, validation, and rollback, and manage cloud consumption and cost.
  • Support database workloads across cloud platforms, including Cloud SQL, BigQuery, and PostgreSQL, using consistent standards.
  • Advise on the move to Microsoft Fabric, including source design, data movement, and integration with the Lakehouse and warehouse.
  • Administer and support NoSQL and document databases such as Azure Cosmos DB and MongoDB, including partition and shard key design, indexing policies, consistency levels, throughput and cost management, and backup and restore.
  • Partner with Development and Infrastructure on data integrity and consistency across relational and NoSQL/document databases, including idempotency and retry patterns.
  • Extend monitoring, alerting, PHI protection, auditing, and backup/disaster-recovery standards to NoSQL and document databases.
  • Maintain monitoring, alerting, health checks, and performance baselines; tune queries and indexes; and drive root-cause analysis.
  • Configure auditing to Information Security's SIEM; design and test backup, high availability, and disaster recovery to RPO/RTO targets; and support audits such as HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, and URAC.
  • Partner with developers and Business Intelligence on data modeling, schema design, and query patterns, and review database code and changes before release.
  • Guide QA on database testing standards for integrity, regression, load, and performance, while QA retains ownership of test strategy.
  • Partner with QA on database acceptance criteria, masked test data, unit testing, and defect triage.
  • Manage database change control and deployments across environments under the IT change-management process.
  • Establish database standards, runbooks, and documentation; automate routine tasks; and advise on licensing and emerging tools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Expert SQL Server administration and T-SQL skills, including performance tuning, indexing, and query-plan analysis.
  • Strong OLTP and analytical data modeling and database design skills.
  • Deep knowledge of Azure database services, including security, networking, high availability, and cost; familiarity with Google Cloud data services.
  • Knowledge of database security, encryption, and auditing, including PHI/HIPAA protection, Entra ID, Key Vault, and Defender for SQL.
  • Working knowledge of NoSQL/document databases such as Cosmos DB and MongoDB, including data modeling, partitioning, and consistency.
  • Scripting skills in PowerShell and Python, and source control/CI/CD experience for database changes using tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, SSDT, or Flyway.
  • A prevention-first mindset, strong documentation habits, and clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • At least 5 years as a SQL Server DBA supporting business-critical production systems.
  • At least 2 years administering and designing databases in Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience leading or playing a key role in at least one database migration.
  • Experience supporting development, QA, and BI teams within an Agile SDLC and formal change management.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to meet the stated background-screen, drug-screen, and compliance requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Production experience with at least one NoSQL/document database platform.
