About Us

Hems & Brims, a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, empowers Black creatives to thrive in the fashion industry through education, mentorship, and access to industry opportunities. We work to expand pathways into fashion and support the next generation of emerging talent. Program Overview We are seeking volunteers for our remote Fashion Education Program running June 6 – November 22, 2026, supporting Black high school and early college students interested in fashion careers. We are currently recruiting for two roles:

• Instructor (Summer Session: June–July 2026)
• Mentor (Fall Session: September–October 2026)

Instructor (Summer 2026) Instructors lead virtual courses on foundational fashion topics, including:

• Black Fashion History
• Fashion Design
• Business of Fashion
• Sustainable Fashion

Schedule:

• Weekends (Saturday or Sunday)
• 9–11 AM EST or 12–2 PM EST
• June–July 2026

Mentor (Fall 2026) Mentors provide 1:1 support and guidance to students exploring careers in fashion. Responsibilities include:

• Weekly 1-hour virtual mentorship sessions
• Supporting student goals and creative development
• Providing industry insight and career guidance

Schedule:

• 1 hour per week (flexible scheduling)
• September–October 2026
• Fully remote

Who We’re Looking For

• Experience in fashion or a related creative industry
• Strong communication and mentoring skills
• Passion for supporting Black emerging creatives
• Reliable, organized, and comfortable working virtually
• Teaching or mentorship experience is a plus
