About the Role

Willow Processing is seeking a Full-Stack Software Engineer (Backend-Leaning) to build and maintain software supporting its loan processing operations. This fully remote role combines backend development, API engineering, frontend improvements, data migration, and AI-powered workflow automation. You will take ownership of features from initial planning and design through development, deployment, and monitoring. Working with engineers and operations staff, you will help modernize legacy systems while maintaining reliable live operations. The role suits an engineer who works independently, makes sound technical decisions, communicates clearly, and knows when to collaborate with others to solve complex problems.

Key Responsibilities

Own software features from scoping and design through development, release, and monitoring. Build backend services and APIs for lending partners. Develop and improve web interfaces used by internal staff and external users. Create AI-powered automation for internal workflows, incorporating appropriate safeguards and human review. Migrate data and business logic from legacy systems without disrupting ongoing operations. Collaborate with engineers and operations staff on larger technical initiatives. Make independent technical decisions and keep projects moving without requiring constant direction. Build and maintain reliable software that supports loan processing and financial transactions.

Required Qualifications

At least 3 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development. Experience with TypeScript and Node.js or Python, ideally with strong backend development skills. Solid frontend development skills using a modern framework such as React or Next.js. Production experience designing and operating APIs, including authentication, idempotency, retries, and observability. Strong knowledge of relational databases and data migration. Hands-on experience with AI development tools and technologies, such as LLM APIs, prompt design, tool use, or agent workflows, preferably using Python. Sound judgment about where AI-generated outputs and automated workflows require checks and safeguards. Demonstrated ability to own software projects from initial concept through production. Ability to collaborate effectively on shared projects and responsibilities. Comfort working in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment. Clear written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote team. Authorization to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience deploying AI-powered features in production. DevOps experience, including CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and deployment automation. Experience in fintech, lending, or mortgage-related technology. Experience working in a startup or small engineering team. Salary & Benefits The annual salary range for this position is $85,000–$95,000. Additional benefits were not specified in the listing.
