PostgreSQL Database Consultant

Remote · United States Full-time

PLEASE NOTE: At this time, we are only considering candidates located in and authorized to work in the United States. JOIN OUR TEAM! Bitovi is looking for a PostgreSQL Database Consultant to join us as we transform technology delivery. We help enterprise clients run critical data platforms reliably, and we’re looking for people with deep, hands-on PostgreSQL expertise to diagnose, stabilize, and tune large self-managed database environments. If you know Postgres internals well enough to explain why a database fell over and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again, we want to work with you! Compensation: $120,000 to $190,000 annually, depending on experience, plus annual bonus opportunity. WHO YOU ARE You’re the person teams call when Postgres is misbehaving in production. You understand what’s happening under the hood, from MVCC and autovacuum to the planner and WAL, and you can turn that understanding into configuration and maintenance changes that keep systems healthy. You’re calm during incidents, rigorous in root cause analysis, and confident communicating findings and recommendations to both engineers and stakeholders. You’ll excel in this role at Bitovi if you have: - Deep, production experience administering PostgreSQL on self-managed, on-premise infrastructure (not only managed services like RDS or Cloud SQL) - Expert knowledge of vacuum and autovacuum: tuning thresholds and cost limits, diagnosing and remediating table and index bloat, and preventing transaction ID wraparound - Strong indexing expertise: choosing among B-tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN, partial, and covering indexes, identifying missing, unused, and duplicate indexes, and rebuilding indexes safely in production - Mastery of PostgreSQL configuration: memory settings, connection limits, checkpoints, WAL, and planner parameters, and the ability to audit an existing configuration and justify every change - Query performance analysis using EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS), pg_stat_statements, and the pg_stat_ views - Experience with replication and high availability (streaming and logical replication, Patroni, repmgr, or similar) and failover testing - Backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery experience (pgBackRest, Barman, or similar), including regular restore validation - Connection pooling with PgBouncer or Pgpool-II - Monitoring and alerting for Postgres (Prometheus postgres_exporter, pgwatch, Datadog, or similar) focused on catching problems before they become outages - Solid Linux administration skills as they relate to database hosts: storage, filesystems, kernel parameters, and resource contention - Incident response and root cause analysis experience, including writing clear postmortems and remediation plans Other skills we value - Configuration management for database fleets (Ansible or similar) so settings are consistent, reviewed, and repeatable - Writing runbooks and maintenance procedures that client teams can own after an engagement - Capacity planning and performance baselining - Major version upgrades and schema migrations with minimal downtime - Working within change management processes in large, regulated enterprises - Security hardening: roles and privileges, pg_hba configuration, TLS, and auditing (pgAudit) - Running Postgres on Kubernetes (CloudNativePG, Crunchy Postgres Operator, or similar) - Scripting and automation in Python, Bash, or Go - Experience with other relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL) WHO WE ARE Bitovi partners with companies to build outcome-focused apps and platforms. Our collaborative approach is driven by validation to deliver the swiftest route to the most valuable solution. We design and build high-profile applications and the infrastructure and data platforms behind them, with tests, full docs, and a real deployment process. We discuss and design architectures, review code, and research new technologies. We talk to our clients, guiding them through the process, identifying potential problems and unknowns, and tackling challenges. We help one another freely. We keep a Slack channel called ask-help, which is constantly used. We develop new skills, build better developer tools, and work on new types of projects regularly. Our fully remote team comprises about 70 developers and designers. We welcome diversity and non-traditional paths into professions. We want the right person, not the right collection
