Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Elios AI is recruiting for an unnamed publicly traded consumer payments company. The Senior AI Engineer will build production AI routing, decision, and orchestration systems, including reusable platform components for customer-facing and internal AI products.

Responsibilities

• Build routing and decision systems that pick the right execution path for each task
• Design intent classification and clarification flows, including confidence scoring and escalation to a person when the system isn't sure
• Benchmark rules, retrieval, classifiers, and models against each other and turn the results into model selection recommendations
• Build orchestration that holds up in production: model adapters, structured outputs, timeouts, retries, and fallbacks
• Connect agents to APIs and tools with authentication, policy checks, customer confirmation, and idempotency built in
• Work with Security and Risk on protections like prompt injection defenses and sensitive data handling
• Package what you build into reusable platform components other teams can adopt
• Monitor AI systems in production and improve them based on evidence, not hunches
• Use AI-assisted development tools daily, with a critical eye on what they produce

Skills

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including AI or ML applications that made it to production
• Bachelor's degree with 10 years of relevant experience, master's with 6, PhD with 3, or equivalent experience
• Strong Python or TypeScript, plus experience with API design, testing, and distributed systems
• Practical experience with LLM tool calling, structured outputs, RAG, and agent or workflow orchestration
• Ability to evaluate models and systems on task success, latency, reliability, and inference cost
• Production engineering depth: cloud deployment, CI/CD, observability, access controls, secrets management, and failure recovery
• Sound judgment about when to use deterministic software, retrieval, or a model, and when to ask for clarification or hand off to a person
• Comfortable working independently within shared architecture standards and collaborating across Product, Security, and Risk
• Google Cloud, Google ADK, Model Garden, or a similar managed AI platform
• Semantic routing, open-weight models, or Model Context Protocol (MCP)
• Experience building reusable agent development frameworks, or Azure integrations
• Background in payments, fintech, or another domain where correctness and auditability are non-negotiable
